INTELLIGENCE, WILL POWER AND PATIENCE
by
Kenneth S. Jaffrey, ND. DC
I practiced Nature Cure for about 50 years and
during that time saw many sick people, but one man made an indelible
impression on me.
He sat there with a dejected expression on his face; he looked sad and
listless.
He told me that he would have to give up the treatment I had prescribed.
He felt so tired so weak and dizzy.
He feared that he would never regain his former strength, and he would
be a permanent invalid.
He wasn't the only patient who had complained in this vein, but he was
the worst, and that is why I remembered him.
I told him this story.
It was about an incident that I had just seen a few days before.
An old man, his back bent forward, was walking slowly across a busy
street.
This man could hardly walk.
He certainly could never have made the effort necessary to avoid an
oncoming motorcar.
And a motorcar was coming towards him at a terrific speed.
Did the old man pause in order to allow the motorcar to pass him in
safety?
Not at all! He continued at a snail’s pace right into the path of the
speeding car.
It was only the presence of mind and skill of the driver that allowed
him to swerve and thus miss the old man by inches.
The old man had missed almost certain death by inches.
An example of mindless impatience! Had he stood still for just two
seconds he would have avoided all danger.
What was he hurrying for?
He was going to see his doctor and even after arriving at the doctor's
office he sat in a chair for about 45 minutes before being seen by his
doctor.
This man took that risk all for nothing, because he was impatient.
I then told my patient of another incident which had occurred around
the year 1820.
A group of people were watching a young man as he nailed a sign over
his doorway. It read simply:
YOU MUST HAVE
PATIENCE
The young man was Vincent Priessnitz, who, as we all know, was the
world's first naturopath.
Most people who have spent years self-indulgently ruining their health,
often demand a “quick-fix,” an instant miracle.
This is quite illogical, but sick people are not always known for their
logicality.
Sick people often do the craziest things.
Fancy taking a known poison in the hope that it will make you well!
Do people do this?
They do it every day!
Fancy drinking urine in an effort to cure an illness!
Surely nobody would be so silly?
Let me assure you that they are.
The regular sale by booksellers of the book: THE WATER OF LIFE by John Armstrong
is proof that desperate people will do anything in their illogical
quest for a miracle.
The trouble is that miracles don't often happen these days.
So, I am making a plea.
Nature Cure has performed what some people might regard as a miracle.
Many people have been speedily restored to health by natural means
after eminent medical authorities had said their case was hopeless.
But, this does not mean that every person, regardless of their poor
hereditary constitution and their history of indiscretion and downright
disregard of all the rules of health, can come to Nature Cure at an
advanced stage of ill-health and demand an instant miracle.
The plain fact is that although Nature Cure is a rational and
scientific approach to the problems of health restoration, it cannot do
the impossible.
We cannot bargain with Nature.
All we can do is to co-operate with Nature and thus give our sick
organism the opportunity to do what it can in the way of repairs.
If your organism has been broken down by years of wrong living and
mismanagement, it would be illogical and unreasonable to demand a
miracle.
This is the time for PATIENCE.
It sometimes takes a little time to get well.
All we can do is to intelligently remove all obstacles to healing.
We must give up those old living-habits which we now know have actually
caused our illness.
We also need INTELLIGENCE.
We need to do everything in our power to cease causing our illness.
Forget about likes and dislikes in the way of food; we are talking
about survival.
If you are not interested in survival, if you don't want to go on
living healthfully, then you should not be reading this anyway.
I have nothing to offer you.
On the other hand, if you want to live and enjoy life to its fullest,
then you must be prepared to pay something for it.
If you have, intelligence you will see and accept the necessity for a
little self-sacrifice to atone for your past sins of indiscretion.
But, intelligence alone is not enough.
We need something else if we are to derive the maximum benefit from a
Nature Cure program.
And what is this “something else?” It is WILL POWER,
a deliberate conscious determination to translate an idea into action.
We have the power to choose.
If we possess the necessary will power we will choose to exercise
intelligence in order to put into practice those things that we believe
will restore us to normal health.
We can say without any doubt whatever that in order to regain our
health we must have the right information.
We must know what to do.
Given the right program to follow we must appraise it and accept it
intelligently.
Having done that, we must translate theory into practice.
We must also exercise will power and patience.
We must be determined to persevere with our Nature Cure program for as
long as may be necessary to attain our goal.
Let me reiterate, that for successful employment of a Nature Cure
regimen we must have accurate information, we need the will power to
put it into practice, and we need intelligence to realise its validity.
Last but by no means least we need patience.
Now, how did I come to be discussing these things?
Oh yes, I remember, the forlorn looking individual who complained of
being too weak and told me was abandoning the treatment.
Perhaps I should explain why it does sometimes happen that a few people
will feel that way.
The reason is not always understood so I will explain it to you.
If, through years of neglect and misuse, one particular part of the
body has become so badly deranged and its function seriously impaired,
this part may call out for relief.
In order to give the necessary relief the body will concentrate all of
its available resources and localize the energy where repairs are so
badly needed.
As there is a limited amount of nerve-force available within the body
it is inevitable that in order to deploy the largest possible quota of
energy to the stricken area, of necessity, other parts of the body may
be temporarily deprived of their usual quota of nerve-force.
This explains why a person who is undergoing a radical treatment may
feel a temporary weakness here and there.
This weakness is not a sign of general weakness.
It is simply a sign that energy is being concentrated elsewhere for the
purpose of repair.
This phenomenon poses no danger.
It is but a passing phase in the processes of cleansing and repair.
When the repairs have been effected the nerve-force will return to
other parts such as the muscles, and a sense of strength and well being
will return.
There is no danger in these temporary deviations.
They are transitory and will disappear when balance has been restored
to the total organism.
My patient did not know this so he was dejected and had decided to
discontinue his treatment.
He needed assurance that the symptoms he was experiencing were not
permanent but transitory phases of an all-out effort of the body to rid
itself of those factors which had contributed to his parlous state of
ill-health.
If we intelligently appreciate what is going on in our organism we need
only sufficient will power and determination.
With patience, the sick organism will always do what it can, and
hopefully, restore normality.
